How to Style Your Coily Hair Extensions

A Complete Guide to Detangling, Defining, and Styling Textured Hair

A beautiful kinky fro is all about balance. You want definition, volume, softness, and shape all working together. The key is not using a hundred different products or complicated techniques. The key is using the right routine.

If you have ever searched how to style kinky hair, how to define kinky curls, or how to keep kinky hair from shedding and tangling, this guide walks you through the exact process.

These five steps will help you create a full, voluminous kinky fro while keeping the hair healthy, defined, and easy to manage.

Step 1. Detangle Your Hair Gently

Detangling is the most important step when working with kinky and coily textures. If the hair is not properly detangled, it becomes harder to define curls and distribute products evenly.

Always start detangling while the hair is dry. This helps remove larger knots before introducing water or styling products. Work in small sections and begin at the ends of the hair, slowly moving toward the roots.

Using the right tools is extremely important. Tight bristle brushes can pull on kinky textures and cause unnecessary shedding. Instead, use tools that allow the hair to glide through smoothly.

Our favorite detangling tools include

Wide tooth combs, which Naturyl Textures includes with every order. Wide spacing allows the comb to move through the hair easily while reducing tension.

The Unbrush, which has flexible teeth designed to gently separate strands without pulling or snagging.

The Bounce Curl styling brush, which works beautifully when defining curls later in the styling process.

If your wig or extensions have not been washed or detangled in a while, especially after one or two months of wear, using a pre shampoo treatment can make detangling much easier.

One of our favorite detangling products is the African Pride Aloe Pre Shampoo. This treatment helps loosen tangles and melt through knots before washing the hair. It softens the strands and allows the comb to glide through the hair with less resistance.

This step alone can significantly reduce shedding and breakage.

Step 2. Shape Your Hair for the Perfect Fro

Shaping your hair is what gives your fro its structure. Even well defined curls can look uneven if the hair is not shaped properly.

If needed, lightly trim the hair to create a rounded afro silhouette. Always use professional hair cutting shears rather than household scissors. Kitchen scissors can create rough cuts and cause the ends of the hair to fray.

A balanced shape helps your fro look fuller and more polished once it is styled.

The goal is not perfection. The goal is creating a shape that allows your curls to expand naturally while maintaining a soft rounded profile.

Step 3. Wet Down/ Cleanse and Condition the Hair

Once the hair is detangled, it is time to cleanse and condition. Clean hair responds better to styling products and allows curls to form more naturally.

For regular washing, one of our favorite combinations is the Aussie Miracle Moist Shampoo paired with the Aussie Three Minute Miracle Conditioner. These products work extremely well on virgin hair and textured extensions because they hydrate the hair while helping it remain soft and manageable.

If the hair has been sitting for a long period of time or has heavy product buildup, using a clarifying shampoo can help reset the hair. Clarifying shampoos remove buildup from oils, mousses, gels, and environmental residue.

A good clarifying shampoo allows the hair to feel lighter and restores the natural movement of the curls.

After cleansing, apply conditioner generously and gently detangle again using your wide tooth comb or Unbrush while the conditioner is in the hair. This allows the conditioner to penetrate the strands and makes detangling even smoother.

Step 4. Define the Curls

Now that the hair is clean and shaped, it is time to define the curls.

When styling kinky and coily textures, lightweight products are often the best choice. Heavy creams or thick gels can weigh the hair down and reduce volume.

Start by lightly wetting the hair with lukewarm water. Lukewarm water hydrates the strands without stripping moisture the way hot water can.

Next apply a mousse to each section of damp hair.

Two of our favorite mousses are

The Doux Honey Foam Mousse, which works beautifully for coily and kinky textures. This mousse has a slightly tackier hold that helps curls clump together and appear more defined.

Lotta Body Foam Mousse, which is lighter and great for curly textures when you want soft movement without stiffness.

Work the mousse through each section using your fingers first. Then use your Bounce Curl brush or styling comb to define the curls and coils.

If you want additional hold or definition, you can apply a small amount of The Doux Honey Styling Gel. This gel enhances curl definition without making the hair feel stiff or crunchy.

Remember that a little product goes a long way. The goal is defined curls that still feel soft and natural.

Step 5. Diffuse and Create Volume

Once the curls are defined, it is time to dry the hair.

Using a diffuser attachment on your blow dryer helps dry kinky hair while maintaining the curl pattern. Set your dryer to low heat and low airflow to prevent frizz and heat damage.

Place sections of hair into the diffuser and gently lift toward the roots. Move around the head to distribute heat evenly so that the hair dries consistently.

Take your time with this step. Allowing the curls to dry fully will help maintain definition and prevent frizz.

Once the hair is dry, lightly fluff the roots with a hair pick to create volume. Focus on lifting at the base of the hair rather than pulling through the curls.

If the hair feels slightly crunchy from mousse or gel, apply a small amount of oil to soften the texture.

Our favorite finishing oils include

Olaplex Bonding Oil, which helps break the cast from styling products while adding shine and softness.

Argan oil, which nourishes the hair and enhances natural movement.

OGX Argan Oil or Coconut Oil products are also great options for adding lightweight moisture and shine.

This final step gives your fro that soft, fluffy, voluminous look.

Final Thoughts on Styling Kinky Hair

Creating the perfect kinky fro is all about working with your texture rather than against it.

With the right detangling routine, the right styling tools, and lightweight products that support curl definition, you can achieve a beautiful voluminous fro that feels soft, defined, and full of life.

Remember the five steps.

Detangle gently using wide tooth tools.
Cleanse and condition to remove buildup.
Shape the hair for a balanced fro.
Define curls using lightweight mousses and brushes.
Diffuse and fluff the hair to create volume.

When your routine is simple and consistent, styling kinky hair becomes less about struggle and more about celebrating the beauty of textured hair.
